RHYTHM IN HARMONY WORKSHOP

What:

This weekend of singing workshops is for anyone who wants to experience singing in harmony and to connect to the ‘groove’ of songs. Participants will be gently scaffolded into this learning through skilfully lead workshops.

 

All ages and levels of experience can participate. 

Sally Randall and Rick Loos of Oamaru Sings will lead participants in fun warm-ups at the start of both days. The three booked workshop facilitators, Lala Simpson, Ra McRostie and Claire Stevens are of international standard and the event promises to be a joyful and positive experience!

 

This weekend offers a fantastic opportunity for all to experience the joy of group singing. Participants will create vocal harmonies and connect together in song and simple movement.

  Scottish Hall Complex, 10 Tyne Street, Oamaru.

When:

  Saturday 15th March

• Workshops 9am to 5pm. 

  Sunday 16th March

• Revision/practice sessions 9am to 1pm. 

• Informal performance 1.30pm, followed by shared afternoon tea

  (Door entry by koha includes afternoon tea)

Cost:

• Waged $80 Unwaged $65

• Payments via online banking to Oamaru Sings account or by arrangement.

Bring: 

• Water bottle

• Packed lunch both days

• Option to preorder That Food Guy individually catered lunch boxes on Saturday with 10% off voucher

Lala Simpson

Lala works with many choirs and vocal groups. She is the director of the Wellington Community choir & Kotaba Voices.

Lala draws inspiration from her Malagasy and African heritage and is a tutor for Village Harmony International singing camps.

She is passionate about community singing and believes in supporting singers to find their voice and that every voice matters.

 

In this weekend, Lala leads community singing with inspiring, fun and accessible songs from different parts of the world. 

You will experience the joy of singing in harmony together, along some fun rhythm that will get you moving.

Lala will collaborate with Ra McRostie in delivering dynamic workshop experiences.

Ra McRostie

Ra McRostie has been facilitating classes based on traditional West African drum and dance for 19 years.

She has studied in Senegal, Zimbabwe, Hawai'i and Australia and has toured NZ with her main teachers Mohammed Bangoura, Epizo Bangoura and Chris Berry.

She has also studied flamenco and Brazilian percussion, plays drumkit and is a singer.

Ra is looking forward to collaborating with Lala who is a good friend.

Claire Stevens

Claire was a long-time member of Dunedin gospel and world music group, Sunny Side Up and their leader for 17 years.

She has learnt from NZ gospel expert Tony Backhouse’s workshops in NZ, Australia and further afield, including one of his gospel tours to the southern states of the US – a rich cultural experience.

Claire has been leading Oamaru’s Limetones choir for the past 7 years, directs Dunedin’s U3A choir, mentors a men’s group and occasionally acts as a short term leader for several other community choirs in the region.

Claire will lead a gospel workshop during the weekend.
